Games Overview

The Games

Since its inception in 1989, the NZ Masters Games has grown from humble beginnings of 1500 entrants competing across 29 sports to the heady heights of over 8,000 entrants and 67 sports, making it the biggest Masters Games event in New Zealand by far.

The 2009 ACC NZ Masters Games was the 20th Games held in conjunction with our partners in Dunedin and by all accounts they just keep getting better and better. It is firmly established as The Masters Games in NZ, and certainly not one to be missed.

The Games was a 9 day event comprising 63 different sports and over 530 individual events. We guarantee there will always be something here that will take your fancy.

So many participants are entering several events these days, so why hold back?

One of the notable aspects of the games in Wanganui is the intimacy of the city. The NZCT Games Village at Springvale Park is within 10 minutes of the main street. 42 of the 48 venues are within 10 minutes drive of the village. You will find the sports venues one of the top quality and the weather is guaranteed to be perfect.

Sports

We welcome aboard four new sports this time that have never appeared at NZ Masters Games before and another three returning after an absence in 2007. So have a good browse through the sports on offer before you make your final selections. There are a couple in there that are strictly limited to those wanting to have fun and a good laugh!

Virtually all sports offer a social grade and are encouraging people to enter, who would not class the event as ‘their’ sport. Table tennis for instance has a novice event that has no age qualification, but you do, however, have to be already entered in another sport. It’s not open to competitive table tennis players. Now we have all had a go at the game in somebody’s garage at some stage so why not add it to your list of things to do at Masters 2009?

Have a closer look at the newbies:

  • Salsa and Ceroc Dancesports
  • Texas Hold'em Poker
  • Wakeboarding

And watch out for the return of:

  • Line Dancing
  • Roller Hockey
  • Waterskiing
