COUNTDOWN!
The 20th Masters Games gets underway in just 63 days. Have you decided what sports you’re entering yet? Have you considered adding some new events to your Masters week calendar?
Spend a day’s socialising with your bowls playing Petanque and Bocce on the purpose built Piste in the Games Village. Twilight 400 and Sports Accuracy Challenge are another two sports that are strictly for those wanting to have a great time and meeting people doing the same thing. Don’t miss out as they will fill up fast!
Or if you have a spare day why not sign up for novice Table Tennis (2 – 3 Feb) or the social 9 Hole Golf (4-5 Feb). Feeling a little energetic? Then jump on a rowing machine and set yourself a P.B. while watching your progress America’s Cup style on the big screen.
And then there is always the beach volleyball on the last day of the Games. And it is not necessarily what you imagine. For starters there are 4 person teams, plus as many subs as you want and clothing is definitely for the more modest. So bring your brightest beach shorts and whatever else you have, to stand out in the crowd. What a great way to wind up the Games!

And 2009 will be no exception. Look for the ACC NZ Masters Games Wanganui debuts from:
- Salsa; as a stand alone dance competition for the first time. And the finals will be contested in the NZCT Games Village after a day of preliminary rounds held in the city centre.

- Ceroc is another emerging dance style that has been added to the Dancesport programme and its flamboyant moves are sure to entertain
The long time favourites of Line Dancing, Roller Hockey and Waterskiing make a welcome return after short breaks. And waterskiing has also added in Wakeboarding for the first time, which will wow the crowds with the flips and turns. Who said you can’t teach ‘old’ dogs new tricks!

As usual the entertainment is top shelf but two in particular you do not want to miss are:
Johnny Devlin
Johnny Devlin was New Zealand's first major rock 'n' roll star. He had a major effect on the domestic scene and was the first musician that parents loved to hate. He was the first performer to be awarded with a gold record. Also the first to go on an extended national tour and the first successful artist to leave local shores for Australia. In the late 1950’s mad hysteria took New Zealand by storm in proportions they had never seen before. Johnny Devlin was New Zealand's original king of rock 'n' roll.
In May 1958 Devlin recorded a poor-selling Presley release, “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” for his debut single with Phil Warren of Prestige Records. Using the Dixielanders as the backing group, the single launched Johnny Devlin as New Zealand’s first superstar. Recorded at the same session was the flipside, “When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again”.
His second single was a cover of both sides of a Jimmy Lloyd record, "I Got A Rocket In My Pocket"/"You're Gone Baby". Hot on that single’s tail was Devlin's third single, "Slipping Around"/"Straight Skirt".
A popular album called "Hit Tunes" put out by Coca-Cola, who had also been part sponsoring Devlin’s national tour contained the tracks "Cast Iron Arm", "Nervous", "Say Yeah", "Matador Baby", "Believe Me" and "Rave On".
Devlin's original recording of "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" had sold steadily since its mid-1958 release. It was decided to re-record the song and the new version was released in February 1959 with combined sales exceeding 100,000.
Another EP, called "Johnny Devlin" was released, containing "Flat 13", "Queen Of The Hop", "I Was Robbed" and "Patty". Two more singles also came out at that tme, "White Lightening"/"Doreen" and "I Was The One"/"Pointed Toe Shoes".
Between 1959 and 1981 Devlin released a further 40 singles, ten EP's and three albums. Music World released an album called "24 Original Golden Greats" in 1980 that contained all of his New Zealand singles.
Shane Cortese
The Outrageous Fortune Star in an outrageously brilliant show!
After sell-out performances and standing ovations, television personality Shane Cortese is set to have audiences jumping in their seats to the “stonking” sounds of his rock ‘n roll show.
The actor who’s voice has won critical acclaim not only from New Zealand audiences but those on the West End as Elvis, Ricky Nelson and Ritchie Valens will be at the ACC NZ Masters Games in Wanganui this February 2009.
Songs include a huge version of Roll Over Beethoven, featuring believe it or not, numerous Beethoven symphonies, and a 20-minute tribute to the king of rock n’ roll Elvis that has left audiences crying.
‘He’s not just an actor who thinks he can sing. The suave actor and his band stage a tight, fast-moving, upbeat, bright show that also revives the magic of Buddy Holly, Del Shannon, Eddie Cochrane, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson and Gene Vincent. Close your eyes and you’d think Elvis had re-entered the room. He is that good”—Sunday News.
